October book club reads

Most months we read two stories and record two episodes of our podcast. This month, in honor of Halloween, we’re reading three stories — though the episode where we discuss Akata Witch won’t come out until early Nov. Our overall theme is WITCHES!

The Witch Who Came In From the Cold, ep 1

Created by Max Gladstone and Lindsay Smith. Written by Max Gladstone, Lindsay Smith, Cassandra Rose Clarke, Michael Swanwick, Ian Tregillis, and Fran Wilde

“The Cold War rages in the dark alleys of 1970s Prague as spies and sorcerers do battle for coven and country. The fate of the East and the West hangs in the balance along the Iron Curtain—and crackling beneath it is a vein of magic, raw and waiting to be tapped.”

The Halloween Tree (special Halloween episode!)

Written by Ray Bradbury

ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT, eight trick-or-treaters gather at the haunted house by the edge of town, ready for adventure. But when Something whisks their friend Pip away, only one man, the sinister Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud, can help the boys find him.

Akata Witch

Written by Nnedi Okorafor

Sunny Nwazua is albino, but that part was obvious. Her bleach-blonde hair, pale skin, and bright hazel eyes attracted plenty of stares and unwanted attention. As if this weren’t uncomfortable enough, Sunny soon finds out that she’s a witch! Now she and her new friends Orlu, ChiChi, and Sasha, must use their magic to save their home from Black Hat Otokoto, a murderer intent on bringing about the destruction of the world.
